Tips on Taking Your Pulse - Heart
Rate
1. The middle and index finger should be placed on the back of
the wrist, roughly one inch down from the top (on the same side
as the thumb).
2. With the index and middle finger gently find your pulse. Pressure
should be kept to a minimum, excessive pressure may alter your results.
3. To determine your pulse in the course of exercise, count the
number of beats (heart) during six seconds and add a zero.
Example:
Number of beats after six seconds = 19
Number of beats (heart) per minute = 190
Pulse rate = 190 beats per minute
4. The carotid artery in the neck should not be used for determining
your pulse. Pressure to this artery could decrease blood flow to
the brain and cause faintness.
Use of a Heart Monitor:
1. The most accurate system for determining your heart rate is
the heart
rate monitor.
2. The most effective heart rate monitors connect to your chest
or wrist. Monitors that connect to your ear or finger may offer
incorrect measurements.
3. The Polar
Heart Rate Monitor is an effective device for taking your pulse.
How to calculate your maximum heart rate percentage?
1. Your maximum heart rate is calculated by subtracting your age
by 220.
Example: A forty-five year old person would subtract 45 from 220.
220 - 45 = 175
