1. The Perricone Weight Loss Diet
2. Dr. Perricone Weight Loss Theories
Can Eating Certain Foods Stop Aging and Illness?
By Rachel Williamson The Perricone Prescription has been receiving
a lot of attention lately. It is not just a weight loss diet, but a way
of eating that is supposed to soften wrinkles, firm the skin, reduce inflammation
in the body, and increase energy. Dr. Perricone claims that in just three
days, people will see the anti-aging effects of this diet.
The staples of the diet are anti-inflammatory foods such as salmon and
blueberries. Perricone says foods such as sugar, pasta, bread, bananas and
other starches contribute to inflammation in the body and speed up the aging
process. He says that inflammation leads to disorders such as arthritis,
Alzheimer's disease, strokes, cancer, and diabetes.
In addition to salmon and blueberries, Perricone recommends the following
anti-inflammatory foods: tuna, mackerel, herring, snapper, broccoli, peaches,
kiwi fruit, and spinach.
So what's so special about salmon and other cold-water fish? They are loaded
with omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to proper functioning of the
human body. Eating salmon and other fish is considered by many to be better
than taking omega-3 supplements. It is believed that the other properties
in the fish such as coenzyme Q-10 and DMAE, work together with the omega-3
to create a perfect balance. It is harder to achieve this balance with supplements
alone.
According to Dr. Perricone, making these changes in one's diet will yield
incredible anti-aging results. He calls this a "Nutritional Facelift"
and says results can be seen in just three days.
While many doctors and scientists are skeptical, there are also many doctors
who believe Perricone to be on the cutting-edge of the science of anti-aging.
Numerous doctors now acknowledge that what we eat has a direct correlation
to the quality and elasticity of our skin.
Whether you are looking to lose weight, reverse the signs of aging, or
just improve your overall well-being, a change in diet should be your first
step on the road to health. Whether you follow the Perricone Prescription
or another healthy way of eating, you owe it to yourself to treat your body
right. It will thank you with many years of beautiful skin and overall health
and well-being.

Treatment and Prevention of Acne
By Nicky Pilkington Is it possible to prevent acne? Most people
would not even consider asking the question unless they were troubled by
this disease in the first place, so it is not really a matter of preventing
acne from occurring at all, but of curing it first, then preventing its
return.
Much advice in the western world declares that diet is not a factor in
causing acne, yet those who live in some other countries are not affected
by the condition. Whether this is an inherited factor, or caused by diet
has not been decided yet.
There are many who now believe that diet does play a large part in bringing
on acne, while there are just as many, or perhaps even more who believe
that junk food, chocolate and foods high in sugar and fats have nothing
to do with acne. The trouble is that if you were not affected by it, you
would not be motivated to modify your diet to resemble that of the eastern
nations.
One thing is clear; acne is not caused by dirt. It is caused when the oil
in our body is not metabolized efficiently and dead skin cells become sticky
and block the pores of the skin. Bacteria then enters into the pores and
causes infection and inflammation.
So what can be done to prevent this happening? It seems logical to eat
less fatty foods, but our body may produce oils in any case. Hygiene helps
to control it, yet acne is not caused by dirt, but by bacteria normally
present on the skin. Therefore, it seems that we must try to prevent acne
by using several different methods at the one time.
Zinc gluconate and some antibiotics administered orally are both effective
in treating the inflammation of acne, while insulin is also reported to
have worked in the same way. No big studies have been done on the latter
though, so proceed cautiously with this one.
Chromium supplements appeared to have worked according to one small study,
while Nicholas Perricone advises a strict diet in which dairy is almost
totally avoided in his controversial book, The Acne Prescription. He also
recommends topical applications of alpha lipoic acid. There was no strong
scientific evidence for Perricone's theories until early in 2005 when a
paper was published detailing a link between acne and milk.
Research is now being done on the use of lasers for the prevention of acne.
Lasers have been used to treat the scars left by really bad acne, but it
is now realized that the follicle sac from which the hair grows, as well
as the sebaceous gland that produces oil, can be burned away by the use
of lasers. They can also be used to kill the bacteria by inducing oxygen
in them. But no one has yet come up with a solution to the possible damage
that the skin might suffer during these operations, so this option is a
long way off.
Losing Weight by Thinking Green
By Tony Robinson Now more than ever, people are trying to lose weight
by thinking green. Green tea is one of the hottest products on the market
today. Its medicinal qualities have been known for years. But can green
tea actually enable you to shed those unwanted pounds?
Research conducted for the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states
that a green tea diet can speed up your metabolism and oxidize fat without
increasing your heart beat. This means that you can achieve a fast metabolism
with green tea without suffering heart trouble. In other words, green tea
enables you to increase your expenditure of energy without causing adverse
health effects.
If you find the taste of green tea difficult to swallow, you can obtain
green tea extract in a pill. The 500-milligram capsules should be consumed
two or three times each day in order for you to receive maximum benefit.
Of course, you might be wondering at this point how much green tea is enough.
Some medical experts recommend as many as ten cups a day. Other health specialists
say that two to three cups are sufficient. Yet other medical experts recommend
splitting the difference, calling for four to five cups of green tea daily.
Green tea reduces your "bad" cholesterol count, while enhancing
your "good" cholesterol count. As a result, those who drink green
tea can substantially increase their consumption of high cholesterol food,
yet maintain a relatively low bad cholesterol count. Green tea can also
decrease your blood sugar, protecting you against diabetes or at least reducing
symptoms of diabetes.
A number of studies have been done in order to ascertain the benefits of
green tea. For instance, researcher William Rumpler conducted a study in
order to determine the effects of green tea consumption on men. The results
indicated that the energy expenditure for tea-drinkers was three percent
higher after they ingested the tea. However, Rumpler and his colleagues
believe additional research needs to be conducted in order to determine
the full effect of green tea upon the human body.
Of course, in addition to weight loss, there are other advantages to the
GreenTea diet. It is believed to be effective in preventing Alzheimer's
disease, combating flu and colds, and boosting your immune system. As a
result, a number of people drink the beverage strictly for its medicinal
value.
On a segment of the "Oprah Winfrey" talk show, Dr. Nicholas Perricone
said that if you replaced coffee with green tea, you could lose as many
as ten pounds in six weeks. Perricone stated, "Coffee has organic acids
that raise your blood sugar, raise insulin. Insulin puts a lock on body
fat. When you switch over to green tea, you get your caffeine, you're all
set, but you will drop your insulin levels and body fat will fall very rapidly.
So 10 pounds in six weeks, I will guarantee it."
However, note that the physician is not prescribing green tea per se, but
rather calling it preferable to coffee. However, it appears clear that green
tea is a healthier beverage than coffee. A study published by the American
Journal of Clinical Study reports that green tea promotes fat oxidation,
and that this process appears to be the result of more than just the caffeine
that is a component of the tea. In other words, there appear to be qualities
inherent in green tea that foster fat oxidation.
It is interesting to note that some people wonder which is preferable:
loose-leaf green tea that you buy online or the green tea that you can purchase
at the supermarket. Generally speaking, supermarket green tea is considered
lower in quality than green tea purchased over the Internet. It has been
said that green tea offered on the Web also enables you to get the most
out of your money.
It appears that green tea is more than just a passing fad. It has emerged
as a legitimate health aid--a product which can help you lose weight over
the long run. While there is no such thing as a magic fix for weight loss,
you should consider adding green tea to your diet, not only for its weight
loss value, but for its medicinal properties as well.
