Eating in the Zone--A Revolutionary Diet Choice
By Tony Robinson One of the most revolutionary diet ideas to come
along is something called the Zone, which was originated by Barry Sears,
Ph.D. The Zone is based on the idea that we should return to the diets of
ancient peoples--diets which stress fruits, vegetables, and meat. The diet
does not deny people carbohydrates, but simply limits their use. Dieters
are encouraged to sharply curtail their intake of pasta and potatoes. The
Zone works according to a formula of 40/30/30, meaning 40 percent carbohydrates,
30 percent fat, and 30 percent protein.
There is a physiological basis to the Zone. Dr. Sears developed the diet
in an effort to limit the amount of insulin in the body. This is because
a large amount of insulin can lead to a build up of fat, causing obesity
and other medical problems. People on the diet are encouraged to obtain
their carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables and their fat from olive
oil and other monounsaturated fats.
The biggest advantage to the Zone diet is that it can lead to significant
weight loss. It is also healthier than some diets, since it eliminates non-nutritious
carbohydrates and emphasizes fruits and vegetables. The diet encourages
people to eat often--at least every five hours. It is also a low-calorie
diet; the typical female dieter will consume only about 1300 calories at
most following the Zone. Another positive aspect of the Zone is that it
discourages consumption of junk food, which may be the basis of much weight
gain.
Some dieticians heartily endorse the Zone, while others dismiss it as being
too difficult to follow. The diet can also be costly, because of its heavy
reliance on protein products. In addition, some critics see the Zone as
being too complex, forcing dieters to spend too much time trying to do various
calculations.
But perhaps the biggest disadvantage of the Zone is its high protein content.
Such a diet has been linked to heart disease and is actually condemned by
the American Heart Association. In addition, the Heart Association questions
whether the Zone is actually effective in enabling an individual to lose
weight over the long term.
It has been said that the Zone diet is the polar opposite of a vegetarian
diet. This is curious, considering that vegetarians are generally healthy
and are less likely to suffer from heart disease. The fact that vegetarians
tend to be slim also seems to poke a hole through Dr. Sears' theory that
starchy vegetables can lead to weight gain.
People tend to gravitate to the Zone because it offers them the opportunity
to indulge in foods that would be restricted on other diets. Also, the diet
can be more filling than other weight loss plans. The problem, however,
is that a number of the claims made about the Zone are unproven. As a result,
despite Dr. Sears' research, the diet has been dismissed as a fad in some
quarters.
Dr. Sears contends that people are overweight because of insulin resistance;
however, it is difficult to verify his claims. It would appear that people
are fat for all sorts of reasons--because of family history of obesity,
eating patterns, emotional eating, and lack of nutritional knowledge. As
a result, it might be said that Dr. Sears' diet is based upon a false assumption.
The Zone benefits from a number of celebrity endorsements. Actresses in
Hollywood credit the Zone with helping them to lose weight. On average,
a dieter can expect to lose five pounds during the initial two weeks and
one pound a week after that introductory period.
Still, some critics charge that the Zone takes the fun out of eating. Whether
this is true or not depends upon the opinion of the individual dieter. However,
one thing is clear: the Zone is a diet phenomenon. Love it or hate it, it's
one of the hottest diet trends on the market today. And it appears that,
despite some negative publicity, the Zone is here to stay. As always, you
should check with your physician before starting any weight loss regimen.
He or she will closely monitor your progress and can determine whether you
are suffering any ill effects as a result of your diet.

Zone Diet
By Anita Cherry The Zone diet helps in loosing weight slowly and
maintaining an ideal weight. It is recommended to manage blood sugar level.
It is a calorie restricted plan. The zone diet is consuming calories in a
balanced ratio of 40:30: 30. That is 40 percentages of carbohydrate 30 percentage
of protein and 30 percentage of fat with special emphasis on lean proteins
fruits and vegetables. Zone diet also insists on control of the portions
you eat and the timing of your eating. Zone diet promotes weight loss or
weight maintenance depending on your health condition and physical activity.
According to zone diet blood sugar can be managed by eating at proper time
and certain foods and can produce low glycemic index. Zone diet was developed
by Barry Sears Ph D a former researcher in biotechnology at Massachusetts
institute of Technology.
Zone diet has several products which can be used for convenience but it
is not necessary to buy to follow the zone diet. The product from Zone diet
are ZonePerfect Meals, ZonePerfect Nutrition Bar, ZonePerfect Shake Mix.The
ZonePerfect Meals contain 4 blocks each. ZonePerfect Nutrition Bar is two
ZonePerfect Food Blocks. The ZonePerfect Shake Mixes contain 2 ½ blocks
each. One mini block is equal to 7 grams of protein or 9 grams of carbohydrate
or 3 grams of fat. Proteins can be lean meat, while carbohydrates can be
half an apple and fat can be nuts or olive oil. A mini block from each category
of cryohydrate, protein and fat is a ZonePerfect Food Block. At least 11
ZonePerfect Food Block should be consumed daily.Fats consumed should be
from monounsaturated fat sources like olive oil, olive, almonds, avocado
and macadamia nuts. Main beverage consumed should be water that is 6 ounce
or 8 cups per day. Even though there is no prohibition to any particular
food some foods like unfavorable carbohydrates should be restricted to 25%of
you total carbohydrate intake. You shouldn't go hungry for more that 5 hours
a day without meal or snack. You should eat a snack within one hour after
waking up. Vegetarians can get protein from beans, legumes and soy products.
In simple Zone diet is 1/3rd plate low fat protein, 2/3rd with fruits and
vegetables.
Many celebrities like Demi Moore, Madonna and Jennifer Aniston swears by
zone diet. Zone diet is not recommended for pregnant women, breastfeeding
woman and children below 10 years of age.
Understanding The Zone Diet
By Dave Saunders The Zone Diet consists of watching what you eat
to maintain proper insulin and is similar to the concepts of low-glycemic
dietary principals. Barry Sears, a former researcher in biotechnology at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, believes that controlling the
levels of insulin will lead to a health happy life.
Another concept in the Zone Diet is the natural maintenance of eicosanoids.
These are hormone like compounds formed by body tissues during self-healing
responses to stimuli. They are formed from highly unsaturated fatty acids
(HUFA) that we acquire only by eating essential fatty acids (EFA) in foods
or supplements.
The Zone is achieved when insulin and hormone levels are in a balanced
state of homeostasis. If insulin levels aren't too high, or two low, findings
suggest that other hormone levels also find a better balance which results
in better energy and a better feeling of a sense of wellness.
The principals of the Zone Diet suggest a moderate intake of protein, fat
and carbohydrates. All carbs should come from low-glycemic sources which
take longer to absorb and therefore induce a more mild insulin response.
All fat sources should come from high quality fats, of fish and vegetable
origins, but again they should be unprocessed whenever possible. The processing
done to make vegetable oils (fats) generally serves to make them more harmful
than unprocessed fats from the same sources.
Because most people are challenged to obtain high-quality levels of good
dietary fats, the Zone Diet recommends that supplements of fish oils be
utilized. When selecting a fish oil supplement, make sure that it is third
party certified to be free of toxins. A process called "molecular distillation"
has been proven to safely extract the essential fatty acids and leave all
other toxins behind. If you do not choose a fish oil that is proven to be
toxin free, you could be at risk of ingesting heavy metals and other industrial
toxins which are stored in the fat tissues of cold water fish.
Overall there isn't a substantial amount of medical evidence to support
Dr Sears' theories for the Zone Diet although many have claimed that the
diet has worked well for them. Principals of low-glycemic eating, which
overlap some of the Zone Diet recommendations, have been clinically proven
to lower cholesterol and improve insulin response, so there is good science
that overlaps with the Zone Diet. Might this be the right diet for you?
Do you own research and then consult a doctor before making any dietary
change in case you happen to have any risk factors which might put you in
danger.

Zone Diet Weight Loss Program
By Lana Hampton The Zone Diet as a weight loss program has
been discussed in detail by Dr. Barry Sears in his book The Zone: Revolutionary
Life Plan to Put Your Body in Total Balance for Permanent Weight Loss.
What does 'Being in the Zone' involve and more importantly, is it a healthy
weight loss regime? Barry Sears, as creator of The Zone Diet was of the
opinion that if a person eats carbohydrate, protein and fat in the right
ratio of 40:30:30 then he or she will improve his or her health, weight,
and performance, because certain hormones will be balanced and therefore
be in the preferred "zone."
The hormones focused here are insulin (necessary for glucose to enter our
cells) and eicosanoids (hormone-like substances that regulate inflammation).
The Zone Diet is a popular choice for some, as it is believed to be a scientific
weight loss program.
The Zone Diet works on the theory that excess insulin, a hormone that helps
control our blood sugar levels, makes us over weight. So Zone Diet can be
defined as keeping the hormone insulin in a 'tight zone'. Zone diet regulates
our blood sugar levels by regulating insulin levels thereby burning body
fat more efficiently so that we lose weight.
To control blood sugar and consequently insulin levels, maintaining a perfect
balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in every meal is essential.
Zone Diet is all about a low carb - high protein diet.
The Zone diet encourages meals every five hours. It also eliminates foods
people tend to overeat; such as sweets, chips, certain starches, and other
junk food. It concentrates on including a number of healthful foods -- low
glycemic fruits and grains (such as cherries, grapefruit, nuts, and lentils
which help maintain blood sugar levels), vegetables, lean proteins, monounsaturated
and omega-3 fats.
Sometimes it may feel difficult to mathematically calculate the food requirements
in your diet. This is where the block system comes in. A 1:1:1 ratio of
proteins, carbohydrates, and fats constitute what is known as a Zone Block.
Food like white potatoes, corn flakes, and dates are a no-no. The Zone
diet works because it is actually a low calorie diet. For instance, the
sample meal plans for an average person totaled approximately 1800-2000
calories per day. Most people (men) would lose weight at this level of caloric
intake if the zone diet is followed. The Zone diet is best for hypothyroid
patients.
